Rooms like these make me wish I had a green thumb. I love the color and shape plant life brings into the home. Alas, I have never been able to keep a plant alive. Granted, I've only tried two or three times, and my first plant-friend fell victim to the mischievous paws of my puppy. But the other two were entirely my fault. And one was bamboo. Isn't bamboo not supposed to die? Help me, readers. What can I do to get a little fresh oxygen pumping through my apartment? Any advice on easy-to-care-for plants?

I have the same problem but I was able to keep my jade tree alive for 2 years. They only need to be watered every other week! Highly recommend!
I'd love to help - but I'm a plant killer too, even bamboo! I really want to get some greens for our home but have no clue where to begin! If you get some good advice, please post!

the only advice is to carefully look for species which need the exact conditions your place offers :) I mean - do not put shade plants in the window full of sunlight and vice versa :)
Oh, and maybe not to touch it much, usually plants don't like it... and while watering not to water foliage - it may cause yellowing of leaves.
You can also talk to them a bit ;)

I'm not exactly a green thumb, but I'd recommend some succulent plants. Pretty resistant and easy to care for. I'm adding some herbs and a tomato plant to our new place thanks to the large sunny kitchen window so here's to keeping them all alive!
I love having live plants in my house. Sadly, I don't know the name of the plants in my house---but I went to my local hardware store and asked them for some suggestions on hard to kill plants...haha. And, so far so good! I have had two of my current plants for over 2 years and they have even survived a 5 hour move!

Oh yeah--And--I followed closely what the plant needed, little light or full light etc.
I'm terrible, but so far my orchid has lasted 4 weeks! I'm thrilled. I love the open shelving in that kitchen you posted. Perfect.
Ha! I am like you. I have had such trouble with house plants. I have a huge green thumb when it comes to outdoor gardening but, in the house, forget it.
I just got a indoor plant this past weekend. A fern that I stuck in the bathroom. I hope that the light and the steam will make it thrive. I will keep you posted.

Succulents are sooooo easy - you seriously can't kill it. Also, orchids always intimidated me but turns out they are actually easy to care for. I've kept mine alive over a year now - just 3 ice cubes a week and its happy!
I say, start easy. Like Dieffenbachia, spider plants, rubber plants, christmas cactus. All very hardy and easy to care for. I have a dieffenbachia that is 10 years old- it's not the most visually stunning plant, but I love it because it likes me and sticks around no matter what...(kinda like my dog)
i LOVE having plants in our place. but i dont take care of them.. i tend to overwater. my fiance is the plant person in the house :) try to plant some basil, it grows pretty easily and fresh basil is the BEST on pizza and in pasta. xoxo jcd :: cornflake dreams
AIRPLANTS!! They're so easy to care for as long as you keep them out of reach of your pet. My cat destroyed my old one but the new one is doing well up on a shelf. You just have to cover them in water every few days, they don't even need to live in soil! That and succulents. They do die but they rarely need watering. I love me some plants!
Try some succulents first. Not only are they really pretty, they don't need much water. I have one I've kept in a window sill for almost a year with water maybe once a week that looks great!
I started becoming more interested in plants about a year ago. Right now I have 10, but killed a few before I was really into plants.
I've found that I was able to keep them alive once I took the time to become interested in them...I try to read as much as I can on each new variety that I get and it's helped a lot. It sounds nerdy, but I even made a spreadsheet (i'm not even a spreadsheet person!) so I have all the light/fertilizer/water requirements in one place, along with any special care instructions. It's helped a ton! I'd highly recommend it when you are starting out.
You'll begin to learn your plants behavior & will be able to tell when they need more/less water, etc. soon. I'd recommend a spider plant, rubber plant or a jade. Just be sure to learn about different water requirements & you'll be off to a good start.
